As of late, I've been dealing with my very own fluctuating emotional cycle and a new job! If you were wondering, I am the lab Assistant to some really amazing Chemists at an Environmental Laboratory. They've done a wonderful job at making me feel at home there... although it’s taking me some time to shed my professional vibe...but I digress. Moving on, In the break room the head chemist and other employees were talking about their first jobs with me and one of them used the phrase "Fake it till you make it" to describe their mantra for getting over shyness in interviews. This got me thinking.
We are often told to do this as a way of getting over obstacles such as acting confident, sexy, or starting a job where you are in way over your head etc. But when it comes to matters of the heart, this phrase is never used because of the general idea that true love cannot be faked. There were copious topics that I found unbelievable, but to say that even with the immense power of the human brain could force themselves to love? I certainly wasn't sold, so I did my research.
Although this topic may seem taboo and generally unnatural to some, I was elated to find out that my faith in our human capabilities and control over our emotions was well placed. To set the record straight, in the case of love, you can in fact "fake it until you make it". With the addition of various uncomfortably awkward steps, you and your next potential life partner could in fact reach genuine love even without the initial interest or attraction. Lucky you!
For my lovely loners out there, research says that looking into your potential partners eyes , making physical contact while talking, holding hands and sharing secrets about yourself increase your chances of falling in love immediately by 45%!(Research done by psychology professor Richard Wiseman) So Go on, flirt you introverts! March out of your comfort zone and demand love from the world! Stare uncomfortably into the eyes of a random person and tell them all about your embarrassing childhood, because you deserve it! So what if they get a restraining order? That’s just one less person to go through on your path to long lasting love!
All jokes aside, Forcing yourself to truly love someone is possible if you are willing to put up the effort (and if they are considerate in the situation).
Yes, learning this did obliterate some of my hope as a hopeless romantic... but I think this just goes to show what humans are capable of when searching for happiness.
Best of Luck on the dating scene Nerdy Birds.
